Chestnut Tree of One Hundred Horses

castagno_100_cavalliThe Chestnut tree of one hundred horses, placed in the territory of Sant’Alfio, is one the of most important and most beautiful monumental trees in Italy due to its age and its size. Its age was estimated at 3000 years.
In the past it was thought that it was not a single plant, but is now considered a single tree, and the three large barrels, 12, 20 and 22 meters in height, are considered the primitive plant shoots.
The chestnut tree gets its name from a legend that a queen (according to some sources, Joan of Aragon, according to others Jeanne d'Anjou), during a visit to Mount Etna, surprised by a storm found shelter under its branches with all his retinue of one hundred knights.
